Job Description

The Medical Assistant (MA) at Gloria Nelson Center (GNC Family Clinic), reporting directly to the RHC Nurse and/or Clinical Supervisor LVN, plays a vital role in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Rural Health Clinic. As an integral member of the Medical Department, the MA serves as an allied healthcare professional, responsible for delivering comprehensive administrative, clerical, and technical support to clinical staff, educators, and healthcare providers. This role is performed in strict adherence to established policies and procedures, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and clinic efficiency.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide routine patient care functions as prescribed by licensed healthcare providers, adhering to established clinical protocols, policies, and procedures within the scope of education, training, and responsibilities.
  • Execute clerical duties as assigned, including scheduling appointments and managing telephone communications.
  • Prepare and administer medications in accordance with provider orders.
  • Document relevant patient information, nursing procedures, and patient responses in compliance with established guidelines, ensuring the confidentiality of patient records.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or required to support clinic operations.
  • Clearly explain the purposes and processes of examinations, tests, and medical procedures to patients, following established protocols.
  • Offer patients general health information and basic self-care guidelines.
  • Adhere to standard infection control procedures to maintain a safe healthcare environment.
  • Initiate emergency procedures, including basic CPR, and assist in emergency treatments for patients.
  • Monitor and record patient vital signs, as well as observe patients for any signs of bleeding.
  • Prepare and position patients for physical examinations, ensuring comfort and safety.
  • Clean and rinse instruments and equipment, ensuring they are ready for use.
  • Sterilize instruments and equipment in compliance with health standards.
  • Address patient inquiries within the professional scope of Medical Assistants’ practice.
  • Respond to Code Blue emergencies and accurately document vital signs, including height and weight.
  • Obtain and document responses to all prompted questions in patient progress notes.
  • Complete necessary forms for laboratory analysis, radiologic testing, and other specialized testing.
  • Assist healthcare providers in obtaining tissue specimens and biopsies as needed.
  • Conduct daily and monthly inspections of emergency equipment according to established guidelines.
  • Collect and prepare patient specimens (e.g., urine, stool) for laboratory analysis.
  • Complete appropriate patient forms as required.
  • Actively participate in departmental meetings to enhance service quality.
  • Request and manage medical records, as necessary.
  • Schedule patient appointments efficiently and effectively.
  • Prepare outgoing mail, record, and send faxes, and maintain department logs.
  • Prepare postcards and other communication materials as directed.
  • Order medical supplies and equipment according to clinic requirements.
  • Demonstrate safety procedures to promote a secure work environment.
  • Answer telephones, take messages, and ensure effective communication with patients and staff.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred, though not mandatory.
  • Ability to quickly establish and maintain rapport with patients and providers from diverse backgrounds; demonstrates strong teamwork.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED certificate.
  • Completion of training aligned with the Medical Assistant requirements as specified by the Medical Board of California, including training under a licensed physician, nurse, or qualified medical assistant, and education from an accredited postsecondary institution.
  • Current and valid certifications in Venipuncture, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant, by any accreditation board preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a healthcare practice or hospital setting, with specific experience in an OB/GYN, Pediatrics & Family Practice department preferred.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and strong customer service skills.
  • Proficient in inventory management.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and proof of insurance.

Pay Salary Range: $18.00hr – $27.00hr

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with occasional overtime, as necessary. Flexible to work weekends as needed – Saturday Shift.
